Skilling’s prison has good food, no bars on windows
WASECA, Minn. ‚Äö√Ñ√Æ The former Enron chief who once resided in a $4.7 million, Mediterranean-style mansion in Houston’s toniest neighborhood will spend most of the next quarter-century with three other prison inmates in a converted college dorm room. Jeff Skilling, the former chief executive officer of Enron, reports Tuesday to the Federal Correctional Institute here to serve his 24-year sentence on fraud and conspiracy charges.
It’s about damn time that Jeff Skilling paid his debt to society. Five years after completing the looting of Enron, and bankrupting hundreds, if not thousands, of his former employees, Skilling gets to become an honorary Minnesotan. Let’s hope he’s bringing a good pair of gloves, ‘cuz they’re sure going to come in handy.
Sadly for those of us who were actually hoping for something approaching justice, Skilling didn’t end up in the federal equivalent of Louisiana’s Angola State Prison. What he ended up in was the fed’s version of a country club, FCI Waseca, which until 1992 was a former branch campus of the University of Minnesota.
Ah, well…at least Skilling will be able to enjoy 24 Minnesota winters before all is said and done, though I doubt he’ll be doing any ice fishing or playing any pond hockey. As a Minnesota native, I can attest to the fact that the winters are long, brutal, and bleak (and did I mention COLD??)…which, come to think of it, makes it the perfect place for Skilling to rot. It may not be Hell, but you can certainly ski there from Waseca.
Enjoy your new home, Jeff…and make sure you bring an extra pair of long underwear…you’re going to need them. ;0)
