This week in Jesusland, 1.7.07

(As ever, many thanks to my friends at The Sinner’s Guide To The Evangelical Right and DefCon)

As 2007 gets off to a flying start, should it come as a surprise that the Rev. (and former DUMB@$$ AWARD wiener) Pat (Lookit me!! I’m an attention whore!!!) Robertson has hipped us to his angry, vindictive, mean-sprited God’s latest terrorist plot against the US? Apparently, we’re all in the express lane on the Freeway to Hell, and Robertson wants everyone to know. After all, he talks directly to God, and God tells him these things.

And God STILL won’t return my &(%%@!# phone calls….

Welcome to yet another year of famine, pestilence, and God having out for all of us. Same as it ever was….

  • Poll: Americans see gloom, doom in 2007: An overwhelming majority of those surveyed think Congress will raise the federal minimum wage. One-third see hope for a cure to cancer….25 percent anticipate the second coming of Jesus Christ.…. And 17% think the Cubs will win the World Series, followed by the Earth being consumed by locusts and pestilence. Hey, it could happen….

  • Many evangelicals cringe at Robertson’s prophecies: Televangelist still draws viewers, but pastors say his remarks make Christians look bad: Pat Robertson may be the founder of the once-powerful Christian Coalition. He may attract nearly a million viewers a day to his “700 Club” television show. But when he claims to make divine prophecies - as he did, again, last week - many evangelicals say he undermines the credibility of their beliefs….”It’s downright embarrassing,” said Todd Spitzer, pastor at Regeneration in Oakland and Dolores Park Church in San Francisco. “When he makes these statements and ties God’s name to it, he’s like the self-proclaimed spokesman for God and evangelical Christianity. It’s an obstacle to us when we want to present a reasonable faith.”…. Hey, come on, now….it works for the Pope…. I do feel for people like Spitzer, though- people who genuinely want to worship and present a reasonable face on Evangelical Christianity. It’s got to be tough when the face of your flavor of faith is a thoroughly wacked-out, self-absorbed, holier-than-thou zealot who is as much about the teachings of Jesus Christ as Paul Hill was about abortion rights. When you’re trying to be reasonable, and your self-proclaimed spokesman is the self-proclaimed head of the American Taliban…well, good luck with that reasonableness thing…. (And for extra credit, check out The 10 Stupidest Things Pat Robertson Ever Said)

  • Redneck idiot races pigs near planned mosque site: A man unhappy with an Islamic association’s plans to build a mosque next to his property has staged pig races as a protest during afternoon prayers. Craig Baker, 46, sold merchandise and grilled sausages Friday for about 100 people who showed up in heavy rain. He insisted he wasn’t trying to offend anyone with the pigs, which are forbidden from the Muslim diet….”I am just defending my rights and my property,” Baker said. “They totally disrespected me and my family.”….Yeah, and proving yourself to be a brainless, bigoted DUMB@$$ is just how you want to go about demonstrating your victimhood….

  • WHY HOLLYWOOD IS INSANE: Eye-opening guided tour through America’s toxic entertainment industry: “Did you know that nine out of 10 Hollywood films lose money?” asks Emmy-Award-winning producer-director-cameraman Jody Eldred in this issue of Whistleblower. “Did you know that the vast majority of new television shows are cancelled because no one is watching them? Do you wonder why?” The obvious answer, says Eldred, is “because they’re mostly awful.” But why are they awful? “Because,” notes Eldred, “the people creating them are completely out of touch with the people they are creating them for! Their worldview is vastly different from the worldview of most Americans. We have a largely Christian nation, but Hollywood is largely un-Christian, and in many if not most cases, anti-Christian. They’re not just out of touch. They’re against you!”…. Actually, Hollywood does it just to mess with your pointy li’l haids…and it clearly seems to be working. How the adherents of this country’s majority religion can claim in all seriousness to be oppressed is beyond me.

  • America: Founded to be free, not secular: Are we a Judeo-Christian country with liberty for people of every, and of no, faith? Or are we a secular country that happens to have within it a large number of individuals who hold Judeo-Christian values? If you are undecided which side to fight for, perhaps this will help: Western Europe has already become a secular society with secular values. If you think Western Europe is a better place than America and that it has a robust future, you should be working to remove Judeo-Christian influence from American life. On the other hand, if you look at Europe and see a continent adrift, with no identity and no strong values beyond economic equality and possessing little capacity to identify evil, let alone a will to fight it, then you need to start fighting against the secularization of America. …. UNBELIEVERS!! TO THE OVENS!!!

  • The anti-gay theocrats are going after divorce in Virginia now: Don’t say we didn’t warn you. To the theocrats, taking rights away from the homos was the low-hanging fruit. But, their victories over the gays emboldened them. Now, they are coming for the straight people - and they want to change the rules for divorce. But, let’s be realistic. That’s just a first step - a slippery slope. You know they really want to ban divorce.…. Any wonder why I want nothing to do with the idea of living in Virginia? Apparently, tolerance and charity are not words in the vocabularies of Virginia’s theocrats. Man, their God must be one cranky, mean-spirited, out-of-sorts SOB, eh? How long will it be before these trolls come to believe that they have the absolutely divinely-inspired right to tell us what we can do, where we can live, what we can read or listen to? Oh, right; it would seem that these intolerant, hatred-fueled, intolerant zealots are already there.
