Another DUMB@$$ AWARD wiener

Wash. initiative would require married couples to have kids

DUMB@$$ AWARD wiener #529: Gregory Gadow

OLYMPIA, Wash. - An initiative filed by proponents of same-sex marriage would require heterosexual couples to have kids within three years or else have their marriage annulled. Initiative 957 was filed by the Washington Defense of Marriage Alliance. That group was formed last summer after the state Supreme Court upheld Washington’s ban on same-sex marriage. Under the initiative, marriage would be limited to men and women who are able to have children. Couples would be required to prove they can have children in order to get a marriage license, and if they did not have children within three years, their marriage would be subject to annulment. All other marriages would be defined as “unrecognized” and people in those marriages would be ineligible to receive any marriage benefits.

Man, just when I’d begun to think that there was NO WAY things could get any wierder than a diaper-wearing astronaut using pepper spray against a romantic rival in an airport parking lot…. Yep, there’s nothing quite like a self-righteous, narrow-minded, religious zealot looking to marginalize who don’t share his views to make you appreciate psychotropic medication…if in fact that’s what this actually is.

This lame-brained idea has got to be just about the stupidest, more narrow-minded, hopelessly ignorant thing I do believe I’ve run across in quite some time. Homosexuals refer to us straight types as “breeders”, but I had no idea that breeding might become an actual requirement.

For those not paying close attention, this IS rather scary.

“For many years, social conservatives have claimed that marriage exists solely for the purpose of procreation … The time has come for these conservatives to be dosed with their own medicine,” said WA-DOMA organizer Gregory Gadow in a printed statement. “If same-sex couples should be barred from marriage because they can not have children together, it follows that all couples who cannot or will not have children together should equally be barred from marriage.”

OK, so I understand that this whole thing is an attempt to ultimately overturn Washington’s ban on same-sex marriages, and not some nefarious plot put forward by Evangelical zealots. On the face of it, this seems like a novel way to get some attention. There’s also a little thing called “The Law of Unintended Consequences” that just might come into play here. Yes, the odds are long, but what if this silly thing actually becomes law? Will the resulting social chaos do anything to repeal the ban on same-sex marriages?

I don’t disagree with the goals of Gadow and his group. In fact, I fully support the idea of same-sex marriage. I’m just not at all certain that this is the way to go about accomplishing that end.
