Congratulations are in order for my oldest stepson Adam, who has spent the last few months in Hollywood For Ugly People Washington, working as an intern for the Human Rights Campaign. As an intern, he’s discovered the joys of working for sub-minimum wage (it’s all about the EXPERIENCE, don’tchaknow….), living in sub-standard housing because he can’t afford to live like real people…all while gaining some valuable experience. In Adam’s case, it truly has been valuable experience. He’s found work he loves, and work he’s transcendently poured himself into. It’s been great to hear the excitement in his voice as he talks about the work he’s taken on.
Last week, his hard work and passion paid off. HRC offered him a full-time position, which he quickly accepted. OK, so he’s putting off a free ride to law school, but let me ask you this: after working and living in Washington, DC, could you REALLY countenance the idea of going back to Carbondale, IL for three years?? I didn’t think so.
Of course, if Adam wants to go to law school at some point, it’s not like the DC area is devoid of opportunities. He could do worse than Pat Robertson’s Regent University, where a trained army of committed Christian legal eagles is slowly but surely infiltrating the federal bureaucracy, advancing Jesus’ hard-line Republican agenda…which clearly calls for the US to be turned into a Taliban-style Christian theocracy.
I’m thrilled for Adam. He loves what he’s doing, and he’s happy…and there are far worse things in life than being happy. He’s where he wants to be, and he’s doing what he wants to do…and how many of us can say that?? So, please join me in congratulating Adam. He deserves it!
She Who Endures My Myriad Eccentricities and I will be going to DC in mid-May to visit Adam and Eric, who will be driving up from William & Mary for the weekend. It’ll be fun to see both of them again…and I can’t wait to have Adam show me his world.
