Other than than, Mrs. Lincoln, what did you think about the play?

An interesting weekend, indeed. She Who Endures My Myriad Eccentricities © and I went to Dallas to visit her mother. This has always been something of a chore for me, because I HATE Dallas (and it’s not all about the Cowboys). Overrated, overgrown, and far too full of itself, Dallas has always grated on me (trust me, I’m no fan of Houston, either, but for far different reasons). Even so, my mother-in-law has found a part of south Dallas that I could see myself comfortably living in. She’s found a wonderful neighborhood just west of Joe Pool Lake and FM1382 and just north of Northwood University. Because of the terrain, the lake, and the parkland, it’s not going to be overbuilt like so much of Dallas…at least not any time soon. It was almost enough to change my opinion of Dallas. Almost.

The one thing I do like about Dallas is that it’s much drier than Houston. It was so refreshing to be outside and not feel as if you’re wearing Saran Wrap in a sauna. OK, so it’s not Phoenix, but at least the humidity was manageable.

Then things got wierd. On the way home, we got hit by an 18-wheeler on I-20, and it took 2 hours for the Dallas Police to respond (at least Dallas has something in common with Houston, eh?). We’re fine (outside of my sore neck and She Who Endures My Myriad Eccentricities © having a bump on her knee), which is more than I can say for my car, but at least we were able to drive home. The guy who was driving the 18-wheeler looked as if he’d been on the road for about 36 hours straight…and he represents everything that makes those behemoths such menaces to public safety. I wanted to kick his ass, and I haven’t been in a fight since 5th grade. Honestly, he should have been cited and pulled off the road. Instead, the police officer at the scene acted as if it was just another example of “boys being boys.” I guess for something to happen, the driver of the 18-wheeler would’ve had to have dispatched us to the Afterlife. Nice, eh?

Suffice it to say that it’s good to be home. Yikes….
