Bush Commutes Libby Prison Sentence
Bush commutes Libby’s prison sentence
Reaction to Bush’s Libby Decision
Text of Bush’s statement on Libby
WASHINGTON ‚Äö√Ñ√Æ President Bush spared former White House aide I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby from a 2 1/2 -year prison term in the CIA leak case today, stepping into a criminal case with heavy political overtones on grounds that the sentence was just too harsh. Bush’s move came hours after a federal appeals panel ruled Libby could not delay his prison term in the CIA leak case. That meant Libby was likely to have to report to prison soon and put new pressure on the president, who had been sidestepping calls by Libby’s allies to pardon the former chief of staff to Vice President Dick Cheney…. “I respect the jury’s verdict,” Bush said in a statement. “But I have concluded that the prison sentence given to Mr. Libby is excessive. Therefore, I am commuting the portion of Mr. Libby’s sentence that required him to spend thirty months in prison.”
That death rattle you heard was the rule of law, which was officially dealt a fatal blow yesterday by Our Glorious and Benevolent Leader © . By commuting the 2 1/2 year jail sentence of Scooter Libby, The Worst President EVER © established beyond the shadow of a doubt that he and his neoConservative ilk are above the law- because regardless of what a court of law decides, The Decider © can erase an incovenient decision with the stroke of a pen. He can determine whether a sentence imposed by a court is appropriate, and if it’s not to his liking, he can strike it down.
I heard the news on NPR last night as I was driving home from work, and I found myself screaming at my windshield. I’m not certain I possess the vocabulary to adequate describe my anger at what this sorry excuse for a President (never mind a human being) has done and continues to do to this country. His and his Administration’s reckless disregard for truth, justice, and the rule of law is a precedent that hardly bodes well for the future of this country.
Here’s a question that begs to be asked yet again:
How could you? If you voted for Our Glorious and Benevolent Leader © in 2000 and 2004, you have absolutely NO right to be complaining now, because YOU’RE responsible for this clusterf—k. YOU fell asleep. YOU swallowed the propaganda without question. When you begin looking for someone to blame…take a good long look in the mirror.
Congratulations! Because YOU couldn’t be bothered to roust yourself from your self-imposed intellectual and moral slumber, YOU elected a President who is gradually but undeniably dismantling American democracy as we know it. I do hope you’re proud of yourself….
