it wouldn't hurt if it weren't true

I have to admit to being tempted on more than a few occasions to stoop to the “Bush = Hitler” argument. I’ve promised myself that I would stay away from such inflammatory rhetoric, mostly because I don’t think it adds anything positive to the public discourse. Nonetheless, I can understand where the frustration that would generate a coupling of such emotionally-laden imagery (ignorance and despotism, narrow partisanship and xenophobia- etc., etc., ad nauseum, ad infinitum). The problem is that, while Our Glorious and Benevolent Leader © and his neoCon thugs may not be gassing millions of Jews, it might possibly be argued that there are disturbing similarities between The Worst President EVER’s © Reign of Error and the Third Reich. I’ll leave that argument to those so inclined, because I don’t think it’s a productive argument.

What does disturb me, and what I think drives much of the comparison, is the reality that our civil liberties are under a seemingly never-ending assault. With 9.11 and “homeland security” being the reasons given every time another chip is chiselled off our civil liberties, this Administration has orchestrated in the biggest rollback of the rights that those of us of a certain age grew up with and came to cherish. Now our government has the right to poke and prod into virtually every aspect of our lives…and we have little if any legal recourse available to us. The truly disturbing thing is that most of what’s done in our name is done without or knowledge or consent. I suppose this is what happens when Americans don’t care enough to pay attention to what the government they’ve elected is doing with the power granted to them.

Frankly, whether King George the Worst’s © Reign of Error can be compared to the Third Reich is really beside the point. The end result, the gradual and never-ending erosion of our civil liberties, is the same.

STILL GLAD YOU VOTED REPUBLICAN?
