And I have a bridge I'd like to sell them

GMA Exclusive: Larry Craig’s Children Speak Out. Craig’s Children Say He Was ‘a Victim of Circumstance’.

“He was a victim of circumstance, in the wrong place at the wrong time,” said Michael Craig of his father’s arrest. Michael Craig and his sister, Shea Howell, decided to speak out about the scandal, but not before making sure that they had all the answers necessary to confidently defend their father. Before standing in support behind the senator at Saturday’s news conference, Craig and Howell asked their father tough questions. They wanted to know whether he had ever been in any way unfaithful to their mother.

Man, talk about the willing suspension of disbelief. Don’t get me wrong; I can understand the love of a child for their father, but Jeebus, people…can we pull out anteriors out of our posteriors here?? Your father, Sen. Larry Craig (R-ID) PLEADED GUILTY to disorderly conduct stemming from being busted for (allegedly, of course) soliciting a police officer for sex in a bathroom stall at the Minneapolis-St. Paul airport.

No reasonably well-adjusted child wants to see their father dragged through the mud. From that standpoint, I understand Sen. Craig’s children wanting to defend their father. But to sit there on national television with a beatific smile on your face as you blithely ignore the reality of your father’s (alleged, of course) transgression is something I just don’t get. Who cares if he’s gay? He pleaded guilty to soliciting sex in an airport bathroom from an undercover police officer. What part of that escapes your comprehension??

Yes, love can be as blind as it is unconditional, and to a point I suppose there’s nothing wrong with that. A child’s willingness to defend their father on national television is a commendable thing. When it’s done with a seemingly complete disregard for the reality that your father PLEADED GUILTY…well, you just look like a DUMB@$$, don’t you?

The senator’s children have concluded that anyone else in a similar situation would have simply said “excuse me” after bumping their foot into someone and moved on. But their father bumped into an undercover police officer, who they say was looking for a different interpretation of his actions.

“It was tough standing next to him, but we are family and we stay together through good times and bad,” Craig said. “We know who he is and we stand behind him.”

Yeah, you may be standing behind him all right, but I wonder if you can take off the blinders long enough to recognize what a (&^%$#@ hypocrite your father is? There’s a reason that rumors about Craig’s sexuality have floated around official Washington for the past 25 years…and it’s not because he’s an overly affectionate, touchy-feely sort. Craig is the same person who came out and denied boinking Congressional pages in 1982…BEFORE ANYONE HAD EVEN ACCUSED HIM OF IT. His behavior of the ensuing years has done nothing to quell the rumors regarding his sexuality.

Stand behind whomever your choose, but you’re doing yourself and your family a disservice if you’re willing to so blithely ignore 25 years of hypocrisy, self-righteousness, and some serious “where-there’s-smoke-there-just-might-be-some-fire” rumors about your father’s sexuality. And if you’re still willing to blindly defend him, don’t claim to be surprised when you come in for your own fair share of ridicule.
