Judge Sentences Nifong to 1 Day in Jail
(08/31/07 — DURHAM) - A judge has sentenced disgraced prosecutor Mike Nifong to one day in jail for lying to a judge while pursuing the Duke lacrosse rape case. Nifong will serve his time beginning 9 a.m. September 7 and will end 9 a.m. September 8. Nifong pushed a faulty case against three Duke lacrosse players falsely accused of rape. Today in court, Nifong insisted he didn’t intentionally lie to a judge about whether he had turned over critical DNA evidence to defense attorneys.
OK, so let’s see…former DUMB@$$ AWARD wiener Mike Nifong, until recently the Durham County (NC) District Attorney, has had himself quite a wild ride of late, hasn’t he? Over the past year or so, he’s managed to disrupt and almost ruin the lives of several Duke University lacrosse players, he’s inflamed racial tensions in an area where those tensions are never far below the surface to begin with, and he’s managed to make a mockery of our criminal justice system. And so he gets ONE DAY’S INCARCERATION for his crimes? Gee, d’ya think the punishment might have been a wee bit different if Nifong was…oh, I don’t know…African-American? Just asking….
One day for one of the most egregiously corrupt overreaches of official oppression in this nation’s history? One day for dragging the names and reputations of innocent young men through the mud (Yeah, they’re rich, White, and privileged…therefore they MUST be guilty of SOMETHING….)? One day for pursuing his own personal agenda regardless of the consequences or regard for the rule of law? One day? Yeah…that sounds about right….
I’m not certain I have the words to describe my anger and dismay at the rank hypocrisy symbolized by this “sentence”. It’s certainly nice to know that justice is blind, eh? And dumb; let’s not forget dumb…because it doesn’t get much stupider than this….
