Lies, damn lies, and Republicans...same as it ever was

Rove Confronted Over Iraq War Lie On Fox News Sunday

Rove Lies Again, Claims Daschle Wanted Pre-Election Iraq War Vote As Much As Bush Did

[O]n Fox News Sunday, Rep. Chris Van Hollen called out Karl Rove for his false claim that Congress, not President Bush, had pushed for a speedy vote on the 2002 Iraq war resolution…. “Clearly things have not gone right in Iraq and you’ve tried to revise history,” Van Hollen told Rove, demanding he “retract the outrageous statements you made.”…. Rove refused to back down, instead reading off a series of quotes by then-Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle (D-SD) that Rove claimed backed up his point. But as ThinkProgress documents, “None of the quotes that Rove used suggested Daschle was desperately trying to force a war authorization vote.”…. Van Hollen then laid down his trump card: a quote by former Bush press secretary Ari Fleischer in today’s Washington Post: “It was definitely the Bush administration that set it in motion and determined the timing, not the Congress. I think Karl in this instance just has his facts wrong.”

It would hardly be a stretch to forgive a human being for making a mistake, for perhaps misstating the facts even though his or her heart may have been in the right place. In the case of Karl Rove, though, forgiveness isn’t even an option…and I’m not altogether certain the man even has a heart. Rove, perhaps the most dishonest, Machiavellian, and anti-democratic politician to ever disgrace the White House, is still spreading his self-interested propaganda, even though former colleagues continue to disavow his propaganda. Perhaps he thinks if he keeps it up long enough, the history books will eventually reflect his version of the “truth”…as if the truth can be parsed and served up in a manner more palatable to those whom history will sit in judgement of. Yeah, somewhere Josef Goebbels is smiling….

What sickens me is that Rove seems to have the blessing of Our Glorious and Benevolent Leader &copy in his efforts to recast the history of the Iraq War in a more kind and positive light. Surely, if anyone- especially The Worst President EVER © - objected to Roves’s propaganda tour, he’d be slapped down in a heartbeat. The silence you hear emanating from the White House should- and does- speak volumes about this President’s commitment to integrity and honesty.

Just when I’d begun to think that current and former members of the Nixon Bush Adminstration couldn’t possibly sink any lower, it’s once again been made abundantly clear that this is a barrel with no bottom. There is no truth that cannot be twisted, no event or utterance that cannot be spun, and no lie that will not be told in order to support the talking/propaganda points of these spinmeisters. I’d like to think that at some point in their careers, most of these folks went in to public service for the right reasons, though I may be giving the benefit of the doubt where it’s not warranted. Somewhere along the line, these (hopefully at one time, at least) well-meaning folks became drunk on power and the allure of their own brilliance. They also managed to develop a healthy streak of intolerance and a hyper-developed sense of their own self-righteousness and moral superiority…as if they- and only they- were the only ones worthy of being in positions of power.

Making matters even worse, America RE-ELECTED a liar and a thug bent on turning the federal government into a dominionist theocracy ruled by those who interpret the Bible to their own advantage. I never thought that I’d live to see a time when American democracy would be threatened with a clear and present danger- and that the threat would come from the very person elected to defend and administer that democracy. The constitution is not merely, to borrow a phrase from Commander Codpiece © , “a God——ed piece of paper”. It’s the very underpinning of our way of life and the rule of law that makes this country what it is. It’s a figurative line in the sand that stands between democracy and those who would turn our form of government into a not-so-benevolent dictatorship.

STILL GLAD YOU VOTED REPUBLICAN?? Don’t you wish everyone would?
