From the Department of Schadenfreude Department....

Ah...I'd almost let this pass without comment, which would be very uncharacteristic of me. Former pretend Congresswoman from TX CD-22 (my old haunt), Shelley Sekula Gibbs, whom one wag once called "Dracula C--t", sadly lost her bid to become a real Congressman last week. By losing to a never-was by the name of Pete Olson, Dracu...er, Sekula Gibbs has deprived late night comedians and the writers from The Daily Show of a potential comedy gold mine. How fertile a source of self-parody was Sekula Gibbs? Well, check this out:

  • Her staff quit almost immediately after she came into Congress in 2006 for her seven-week reign of terror as Tom DeLay's replacement.

  • She vowed to overhaul the tax code and fix the Iraq war during that time, too.

  • Voters in her heavily Republican district opted for Democrat Nick Lampson that year rather than suffer the agonies of spelling her name correctly on a write-in ballot.

  • In this most recent humiliating episode, Senator John Cornyn and pretty much every other Republican in the state endorsed Pete Olson, a former Senate aide.

The first accomplishment was perhaps the most entertaining. In the space of seven short weeks, she accomplished what previously might have been unthinkable: she made people forget about Tom DeLay. The single most venal and corrupt Texas Congressman in modern history has his 22-year reign of corruption of self-aggrandizement eclipsed in SEVEN weeks by a dermatologist and intellectual lightweight best known for being a political nonfactor on Houston's City Council.

Now CD-22, formerly a haven to self-absorbed, knee-jerk, knuckle-dragging uber-Christian Republicans, will have to settle for either continued competent and committed representation or yet another slash-and-burn Republican ideologue. Having living in the district for 10 years, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Christian troglodytes in Ft. Bend County toss Nick Lampson out for an unknown, but reliably lock-step Republican non-entity.

I will miss Dracu...er, Sekula Gibbs, though.... ;-)
