The National Rifle Association plans to spend about $40 million on this year's campaign, with $15 million of that devoted to portraying Barack Obama as a threat to the Second Amendment rights upheld last week by the Supreme Court.... "Our members understand that if Barack Obama is elected president, and he has support in the Senate to confirm anti-gun Supreme Court nominees, [the District of Columbia v. Heller decision] could be taken away from us in the future," Chris Cox, head of the NRA's political arm, told Politico. The politically powerful gun rights group will split its message efforts between communicating with its 4 million members and the tens of millions more firearms owners across the country.
I suppose I shouldn't be surprised; after all, this sort of thing is quickly becoming the official tenor of the Republican campaign effort. Rather than focus on what your own candidate has to offier, why not use simplistic emotional appeals to scare the Hell out of those who think like you or might be inclined to react instead of think?
If you think that Sen. Barack Obama is going to take away your guns once he becomes President, you should probably just go ahead and turn in your voter registration card now- because you're clearly too stupid to be trusted with a vote. If you want to vote for Sen. John McCain, that's one thing. I may not agree with you, but free choice is the essence of our democratic system. However, if you're so intellectual vacant and malleable that you're open to this sort of manipulation...well, I suppose this would explain the eight-year Reign of Error © of Our Glorious and Benevolent Leader © , wouldn't it??
I can't help but thinking that this $40 million couldn't be put to much better use...of course, if you're the National Rifle Association, this is chump change, and you probably can't even be bothered to consider alternatives. It would be nice to think that the level of debate might be kept on a level that doesn't rank with knuckle-dragging, but when you have no ideas of your own and nothing of any value to add to the debate...well, a little character assassination goes a long ways, no?
And you wonder why so many sheeple are convinced that Sen. Obama is a committed America-hating Muslim....
