Doing the right thing for the right reason

MY NEW HERO #131: Adm. & Mrs. Michael Mullen, USN

U.S. News reports that Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman Adm. Michael Mullen and his wife are known "for welcoming friends and associates during back-to-back parties at their decked-out Foggy Bottom digs." For example, last year featured musician Kid Rock "enjoying heavy hors d'oeuvres" and expensive beverages. This year, however, the Mullens are canceling their party. According to the invite, "in these trying financial times they have decided to forego their their holiday reception".

On the face of things, giving up lavish holiday parties may seem a small thing, but in times like these, even "small" gestures can mean a lot. OK, so it's a symbolic gesture, but given Adm. Mullen's conspicuous position of authority, there is something to be said for setting an example.

So...when you begin to fret over the excesses of Wall Street and fat-cat CEOs, remember that there are still decent people who "get it". Sometimes one is all it takes.
