Back to the future...or, what this city needs is a good sex scandal

OK, so Portland Mayor Sam Adams finally went back to work yesterday. Forget the sex scandal...I want to know how he can decide not to show up for work for close to a week (after being in office all of 3 weeks)...and still have a job (and where can I get a job like that??). If I did that with no explanation, I'd be out on my butt...and deservedly so.

Ah, but I digress.... Now, where were we? Ah, yes, a good old-fashioned gay sex scandal...although, speaking for myself, it doesn't matter to me if Adams was boinking an 18-year-old starry-eyed young man or buggering knotholes. My concern is with Adams' lies and lack of integrity. Can he recover from the beyond-awkward position he's put himself in? Can he convince the people of Portland that he's capable of leading the city and credibly addressing the agenda he laid out during this fall's campaign? Will Sam Adams actually be able to get anything done...and will he be able to bring people together?

For Adams' sake, and for the sake of all Portland residents, I sincerely hope that he'll be able to overcome the very long odds he faces and get things on track. How does he go about doing this? How in the Hell would I know? Do I look like a political consultant (short answer: "No")? I'm not optimistic, but then I'm not the one trying to make a political comeback after all of three weeks (and a sex scandal) in office.

Memo to those of you thinking of running against Sam Adams in four years: feel free to borrow this campaign slogan gratis:

SAM ADAMS: KEEPING UP WITH THE YOUNG 'UNS!

Before you start hatin' on me for that one, y'all, keep in mind that I've never made any claims to being particularly PC....

Sam Adams has made his bed. Whether or not he'll be able to get out of it is up to him. I'll be watching.
