Racism 101: The only thing missing is the bone through his nose

kenya.jpg

I found this on the home page of one of my (now former) Facebook friends. To say that I was offended wouldn't begin to do it justice. The fact that people like her see nothing at all wrong with using racially stereotypical imagery is something that any American, regardless of ideology, should find disturbing. There's simply no call nor excuse for engaging in such blatant racism. In this case, this person's ignorance seems to be exceeded only by her unfocused rage and hatred.

I can understand a difference of opinion, or even an active dislike for the President. Those of us on the Left suffered through eight years of the most inept and criminally incompetent President EVER. I detested George W. Bush and everything he stands for Some of my compadres were less than charitable. In this case, though, there's added ammunition in that Barack Obama is half African-American. Since January, we've been "treated" to the reality that much of the Right is far more racist and reactionary than anyone knew.

Winston Churchill once said that he wouldn't have a battle of wits with an unarmed opponent. Judging by what I've seen from the far Right since Barack Obama's inauguration, I'm looking straight at an unarmed opponent...or one armed only with ignorance, rage, reaction, and racism. How can one possibly hope to have a reasoned, rational discussion with people like this? Politics may be the art of the possible, but at this point I see no hope of anything resembling a meeting of the minds...and for too many on the Right, their minds are hermetically sealed and impermeable to reason.

Conservatives rage over Starbucks ad mocking town hall screamers

Good God, y'all? Can you just learn to lighten up, already? There's nothing sacred or sacrosanct about your ideology or the way in which y'all conduct yourselves. If you're honest, you'd admit that far too many Tea Partiers and town hall screamers have made Conservatives in general and Right-wingers in particular look pretty ridiculous. If you can't laugh at yourself, what hope do you really have?

The problem with so many on the right side of the political spectrum is that far too many are horribly humor-deficient. Too many view poking fun at their antics as something akin to blasphemy...and yet most have no problem with ridiculing Liberals. Somewhere along the way, Conservatives lost anything resembling a sense of humor. Sadly, the reality is that the Right just isn't funny. They know that, and their anger demands that they blow past the humor in any situation and latch onto anything on which they can focus their considerable self-righteousness. Jeebus, y'all; get over yourselves already.

OK, y'all...today's assignment is to look in the mirror and define "hypocrisy". It should be easy, because you're looking at it.
