A vast time suck...or a harbinger of the approaching Apocalypse?

I don't want to seem hypocritical here...because I also have a Twitter account, but when I see stuff like this, even I find myself having a "WTF???" moment. Have we really reached a point where we think that people actually care about what you made for dinner? Have we reached a point where people actually DO care about what someone thousands of miles away made for dinner? Have we reached a point where there is so little of meaning and value taking place in our own lives that we surround ourselves with this sort of meaningless minutiae? Or am I just spitting into a very stiff cultural wind?

One of the things that fascinates me about Twitter and other forms of social media (yes, I have a Facebook account as well....) is the way in which our world has shrunk. We now have the ability to communicate instantly in several different ways, and it's become something so ubiquitous that we merely take it for granted, as if it's always been was what it is now.

I use my Twitter account mostly to promote posts here on WWJD, but there have also been occasions when I've found myself sucked into the vortex, only to become part of the hive mind. From time to time, I'll be able to interact with someone I'd never have an opportunity to otherwise. Sometimes, it's just a vast time suck. I STILL can't quite wrap my head around the question of whether or not this is all actually a good thing. There are folks who, at least based on their own testimony, have used Twitter to make money, but I don't want to become part of someone's multi-level marketing scheme. So what IS all of this good for?

There's also the possibility that this may all be generational. Perhaps social media is something that's largely bypassed my generation. Given that I'm old enough to remember when telephones were rotary dial, plugged into walls, and used only to make phone calls...yes, the world is moving pretty quickly. I don't know that I'm at risk of being passed by, but keeping up is proving to be bit of a challenge.

In the meantime, anyone care to know what I had for breakfast?? ;-)
