Better to be thought a fool than to be Steve King and remove all doubt

THE WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD

(apologies to Keith Olbermann)

Rep. Steve King (R-IA)

KING: And he said, “let me ask you a question.” “Am I heterosexual or am I homosexual?” And they looked him up and down, actually they should have known, but they said, “We don’t know.” And he said, “Exactly, my point. If you don’t project it, if you don’t advertise it, how would anyone know to discriminate against you?” And that’s at the basis of this. So if people wear their sexuality on their sleeve and then they want to bring litigation against someone that they would point their finger at and say, “You discriminate.” …This is the homosexual lobby taking it out on the rest of society and they are demanding affirmation for their lifestyle, that’s at the bottom of this

No matter how much I try to live in a world where the color of your skin, the flavor of your religion, your political affiliation, and/or your sexual orientation don’t matter, there are those out there who see those who aren’t like them as legitimate threats. Sadly, some of these folks are in Congress, elected by people every bit as (and perhaps even more) bigoted and self-righteous as they are.

Why these haters are so focused on homosexuality is something I can’t begin to fathom. People like Steve King are incensed by what they feel is too much government intrusion in their lives…and yet they’re more than willing to allow government into the bedrooms of those they despise. I can’t help but wonder…perhaps the reason that King is so deathly afraid of “the gay agenda” is that he’s so fearful and uncertain of his own sexuality? After all, what is there to be afraid of if you’re secure in your own sexuality?

Here’s what I want to know: what constitutes wearing one’s sexuality on one’s sleeve? What does “advertising” one’s sexuality mean? By King’s estimation, those who choose not to conform to the expect of the dominant (heterosexual) culture are guilty of “advertising”. The question, of course, is who died and appointed Steve King the arbiter of appropriate behavior and conduct? And isn’t rather arrogant to proceed from an assumption that your lifestyle and sexuality are by definition superior to those who happen not to share them? Whatever happened to life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness?

We have real problems in this country. The economy. Health care. Two wars. Education. These and other issues are the things that our elected representatives should be devoting themselves to resolving. When bigots and haters like King view themselves as the de facto host of “Straight Eye For The Queer Guy”, we all lose, because the things that should be getting fixed aren’t being fixed.

Memo to Rep. King: how about you stop obsessing about what Gays and Lesbians do behind closed doors (and how the comport themselves) and start trying to fix the many legitimate problems this country faces? What other people do in their private lives, and how they conduct themselves, is nobody’s damn business. How about doing what you were elected to do? Lead, follow, or get the Hell out of the way.

WE DESERVE BETTER.
