Is Elena Kagan gay? And why should anyone even care?

COLBERTPURITY-large.jpgWhen did we become a nation of such rude, demanding busybodies? And when did the alleged sexual orientation of a Supreme Court nominee become the leading indicator of her fitness to serve on such an august body? When last I checked, a Supreme Court justice rules on cases brought before it. I recall no occasion during which a justice’s sexual orientation or prowess had even the remotest bearing on the task at hand- creating legal precedent. Yet there are those who not only expect Elena Kagan’s sexuality to be fully disclosed and dissected…they DEMAND it. Why? Have our prurient interests really risen to the level where we give them the same weight and importance as legitimate questions about a public figures competence and fitness to hold the job she (or he) has been nominated for?

Silly me; I was raised to believe that what an adult does behind closed doors is their own business. What happens between consenting adults is a matter for and between those adults. So what if Kagan likes girls, boys, AND livestock (or combinations of all of the above)? What bearing does, or should, that salient fact have to do with the question of her fitness to serve on the highest court in the land?

Think about it for a moment; would you want what you do in your most private moments to become fodder for those looking to destroy you? How many of us would be willing to serve our country in ANY capacity if we knew that our private life would be subjected to some sort of moral fitness test by those with an axe to grind and blindingly willing to destroy you if need be? Hell, I wouldn’t run for city dog catcher. Some things deserve to stay buried…if for no other reason than to protect the not-so-innocent. ;-)

From where I sit, I really think that those who waste so much time obsessing over the sexuality of others really should spend more time focused on their own. Perhaps if they weren’t so uptight and conflicted about their own sexual identity (or their inability to get laid), this wouldn’t be an issue. Perhaps if more people got busy gettin’ busy, they’d learn how to relax…and maybe they’d come to see the value in the phrase “live and let live”.

And as for Elena Kagan (and anyone else chosen to serve our country)…well, you just keep doin’ whatever (and whoever) it is you done been doin’. It’s nobody’s damn business but your own, anyway.

Party on, Garth….
