Because bacon really does make EVERYTHING better...even my iPhone 4

OK…so I’ve been following “Antennagate” with varying degrees of amusement and bemusement. My partner in crime blogging, Brian Kane, has an interesting take on the issue. From my perspective, I’m wondering what the fuss is all about. The reception issue, such as it is, apparently involves only a VERY small number of users overall. Judging by the media fuss, though, you might find yourself thinking that the iPhone 4 is electrocuting small children. Not quite.

Of course, any product performance issues needs to be addressed and resolved quickly, but from my experience Apple has done exactly that. Sitting on the top of the mountain as it does, I suppose it’s natural for those with agendas or axes to grind to want to knock Apple from its perch; that’s just Human Nature 101. Still, is there a smart phone out there that outperforms the new iPhone? I got mine the day prior to it’s official release, and I’m still amazed that something I can easily fit into my pocket does so many things so well. It reminds me of an old Saturday Night Live skit:

IT’S A DESSERT TOPPING AND A FLOOR WAX!! And it does both exceedingly well….

I understand the idea that if one spends a lot of money on a product, it’s not unreasonable to expect perfection. After all, we want things to work…otherwise, we wouldn’t buy it, right? Still, I’m a bit disturbed by the collective predilection for jumping on Apple and assuming that they’re the Evil Empire. Yes, Steve Jobs doesn’t often do himself any favors in the PR department, but I’m on my fourth iPhone, and I can honestly say that I’ve never had a problem with any of them. If anything, they’ve worked far better than any other phone I’ve owned…and I’ve been through a lot of cell phones in my time.

Apple’s a target; I get that. Still, if the biggest “problem” in your life is with your cell phone, I’d submit that you’re leading an impossibly charmed existence, and you’d do well to keep that in mind. In the meantime, if you need me, I’m going to be listening to some Robert Earl Keen…on my iPhone 4.

Don’t hate me because I’m beautiful….
