Rights? They're whatever Conservative White Christian Males want them to be.

We like to think that the rights we enjoy are guaranteed by law. You might think that would be the case, but it turns out that the law is but a minor inconvenience when creative, unprincipled, and dedicated zealots are on the job. When they decide that the law is an ass and that rights guaranteed by law can and should be circumvented and/or negated, well, it’s just a matter of time before they figure how to do just that. Hijacking the letter and the spirit of a law by passing ancillary laws that directly impact the provisions of an unrelated law have become the Rabid Right’s stock in trade. This tactic is now being used to nibble away at a woman’s right to control her reproductive functions. It’s immoral, it’s unethical, and it’s a “legal” way to disobey a law…but this is what the Rabid Right has been reduced to. Unfortunately, this strategy, odious as it is, works. Rights aren’t destroyed by sledgehammer blows; they’re patiently chipped away by blows from a rubber mallet.

This nefarious tactic is bad enough when you consider how it can be (and is being) used to complicate and negate a woman’s right to an abortion. Who’s to say that it will stop there? Once the Rabid Right perfects this technique and make obtaining a legal abortion all but impossible, who’s to say that it won’t be used on voting rights? Or freedom of speech? Or freedom of assembly? Or freedom of religion? Or [insert your cherished and imperiled right here]?

First they came for the Gays, but I didn’t say anything because I’m not Gay….
