Today's "WTF??"moment...or, we'll be needing less Kleenex and hand lotion

The Iowa Republican Party is seeking to establish a “no-activities night” every Wednesday in the state….”We support the establishment of a no-activities night on Wednesdays,” reads section 4:33 of its platform…. The unique declaration is sandwiched between clauses stating a commitment to allowing Bibles in schools and supporting the right to teach one’s kids how to drive. It’s unclear what activities will be off limits on Wednesdays, seeing as how some activities are necessary for survival.

It’s not often that I find myself rendered speechless, but today’s “WTF??” moment has accomplished exactly that. Having grown up in Minnesota, which is basically Iowa with better-looking cheerleaders and less corn, even I can’t begin to understand what in the Hell this is all about. “No-activities night”? Yeah, right. You’d think that with all the REAL problems this country faces today, Republicans would be focusing their energies more productively. Then again, this is what Republicans do, right? They dodge and/or demagogue real, substantive issues, and then plant their flag on vague, ill-defined, “family values” issues. This allows them to look as if they’re actually doing something without ever having to really break a sweat.

Then again, if Republicans are focused on tinkering around the margins on meaningless “social issues”, it’s going to be tough for them to do any real and significant damage to the country, eh?
