Desperate times call for desperate measures, Part Deux

Day 2, Snowpocalypse 2011….

As conditions continue to deteriorate, I’m still trapped in Lake Oswego. Though snow accumulation has been less than expected, the Portland area appears to have ceased to function due to sub-freezing temperatures and the ice. Reports continue to filter in from the hinterlands (Beaverton, Hillsboro, and Troutdale) of rampant cannibalism and looting as supplies of Merlot and Pinot Noir have fallen to near-catastrophic levels. Though I’ve contemplated venturing out from my protected compound here in the ‘burbs, I’m not certain I’m ready to face the potential risks of travlling unarmed in an attempt to reach the relative safety of a grocery store.

At times I’ve stood outside the front door to my girlfriend’s apartment, only to hear the distant reports of rifle fire and the blood-curdling screams of those caught in the frenzy. No one knows how many have died at the hands of the desperate, as most in the Portland area remain too terrified to leave the safety and comfort of their well-barricaded homes. Neighbors on both sides of us have set up ambush zones with interlocking fields of fire, unwilling to take a chance on allowing the fight to come too close to them.

For now, we’re in good shape. Though we’re down to our last half-bottle of Riesling (and the French Roast is running desperately low), our spirits remain high as we hope to be able to hold out long enough for the snow and ice to melt and the Starbucks down the street to re-open. If the snow doesn’t melt in the next day or two, we may well be reduced to preying on the old and infirm…and I’ve noticed that some of the neighbors are getting on in years. Should matters become even more desperate, we might be well-positioned to survive long enough for help to arrive with lattes.

Pray for us….
