Another dispatch from our our idiocracy

He may look like an idiot and talk like an idiot, but don’t let that fool you- he really IS an idiot.

  • Groucho Marx

I was taught evolution in high school. I do believe in it. I’m a huge science geek…I like to believe in the big bang theory and, you know, the evolution of humans throughout time.

  • Alyssa Campanella

There are times when it feels as if life has devolved into one long, unbroken “face palm” moment. It’s difficult to believe the degree to which intellectual sloth and incuriosity has become the lingua franca of our public discourse. In an era when the Tea Party’s ideological silliness (at least in their minds) trumps empirical science and immutable truth, we’ve become inured to those who hold to what they believe even in the fact of overwhelming evidence to the contrary.

How bad have things becomes? How collectively brain-dead have the American Sheeple demonstrated themselves to be? Well, evidently so much so that we’re now reduced to celebrating Miss USA contestants who actually…wait for it…believe in evolution. Yeah, I know; don’t get me started on my opinion of our collective IQ.

OK, so I’ll cop to what I couldn’t deny to begin with- this is just a cheap excuse for me to post a picture of an impossibly beautiful woman, one so far out of my league that…ah, but I digress…. ;-)

The sad thing is that the Q & A portion of the recent Miss USA pageant included a question on evolution. You’d think that any lucid human being could knock that one out of the park, right? Well, here in our new, unfettered idiocracy, we’re reduced to celebrating the fact that only a couple of the women involved hit the mark. One of those who demonstrated an allegiance to intellectual reality is Alyssa Campanella, the lucky new Miss USA. Now, I know nothing about Ms. Campanella or her intellectual bona fides…but in a competition more famous for airheads and stunning, shallow ignorance, we really should celebrate someone who actually has a clue about what she’s talking about. How sad is that?

Then again, I suppose this is what happens when our educational system morphs into what should more accurately be called an indoctrination system. Edumication? Who needs edumication. Wee haz Jesus!!
