When a Republican President does it, it's prudent leadership. When a Democratic President does it, it's treason.

THE WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD

(apologies to Keith Olbermann)

NH State Rep. Harry Accornero (R-Laconia)

Harry Accornero (R-Laconia) sent an email to every New Hampshire state representative stating that President Obama “has crossed the line, and under Article III section 3 of our Constitution is guilty of treason by giving aid and comfort to the enemy and attempting to overthrow our government from within.”…. “I am formally asking you to bring a commission of treason against Mr. Barack Husain [sic] Obama,” wrote Accornero in the email, posted by Blue Hampshire and obtained by The Huffington Post. “We have a President who allows our borders to be violated by illegals of any country while we are at war. He allows them work permits, access to our services and when apprehended by law enforcement refuses to have them jailed or deported.”

I find it interesting that someone could think Barack Obama guilty of treason for the very same “offenses” that were occurring during the eight-year Reign of Error ©. If Obama can be accused of treason, then a reasonable person would have to ask where the outrage was during the Bush years. Of course, there’s a very simple explanation: Being a Republican means never having to say you’re sorry…or worry about being held accountable.

Yes, I realize that Accornero is your garden-variety partisan (probably racist) loon. I understand that few will take him seriously…but Accornero is hardly the first Right-wing nutjob to broach the subject of impeaching the President. I mean; these are not stupid people…right? You’d have to believe that they can surely recognize the rank hypocrisy in their position…right?

I can understand that Accornero and this ilk have some serious ideological differences with the President. They’re Far Right Conservative Republicans, he’s a Democrat; no big surprise there. What I do find disturbing, though, is how blithely some on the Far RIght toss around the term “impeachment”, as if it’s a viable and available option for getting rid of a President whose ideology you happen to disagree with. If “ideological differences” are now to be translated as “high crimes and misdemeanors”, then we’ve crossed the Rubicon when it comes to maintaining even a facade of civility in government.

Ideological differences are not evil. Good people, should, will, and do disagree; it’s what has historically kept our democracy healthy. The problem comes in when you define the worthiness of people by their ideology- someone disagrees with you… ergo, they are evil and worthy only of destruction. When we begin demonizing those who ideology differs from our own, and with an idea towards destroying that person, we’ve lost something irreplaceable- our moral compass and respect for differing viewpoints and world views.

Never mind the fact that Obama is “guilty” of the same “crimes” that George W. Bush was. Remember, being a Republican means never having to say you’re sorry or worry about being held accountable. Being a Democrat means you may well be targeted for impeachment for “crimes” a Republican President would never be held to account for. Welcome to American Democracy.

WE DESERVE BETTER.

Move along people…nothing to see…no double standard here….
