Yes, this is satire…but in good satire resides an uncomfortable element of truth, and so it is with Mitt Romney. He’ll be running against Barack Obama come the fall, but even more than that he’ll be running against and earlier version of himself. Having previously supported gay rights, a woman’s right to choose, and universal health care as Governor of Massachusetts, he’s going to struggle to rationalize his now-unalterable opposition to those things.
Not many pundits are going to be willing to put it this starkly, but Mitt Romney is an accomplished, inveterate liar. How true is this? So true that he even lies about being a person of integrity. Romney is a candidate who will say anything he feels will increase his electability; facts and truth are inconvenient and best ignored. Though even a minimal amount of research will easily and amply expose Romney for the liar he is, he’s not concerned about what discerning voters think. He’s concerned with appealing to the majority of voters who can’t be bothered to pay attention…what might be referred to as “low-information” voters.
Remember, it’s not about the truth; it’s about what you can convince voters is true. Winners exploit that distinction…and that seems to be Mitt Romney’s driving philosophy.
