What's in a name? Try asking Gerry Sandusky...no, not THAT one....

MY NEW HERO

Gerry Sandusky…with a “G”

inigo.jpgWhen you begin thinking that your life sucks, I have an exercise in perspective for you: try imagining what it must be like for the man who shares a name with one of the most notorious child sexual predators in American history. Yes, things could be worse; you could be Gerry Sandusky. No, not Jerry Sandusky; there’s that subtle difference of the first name beginning with different letters.

Sandusky (the Gerry with a “G”), the radio broadcaster for the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens, has endured all manner of abuse from people whose thought processes begin and end with his name. Everywhere he goes, he experiences threats, abuse, and the vilest sort of name-calling imaginable…and yet he’s managed to retain his dignity and his sense of humor. That should be a lesson for all of us. It certainly is for me, and when I think of examples of heroism and decency, Gerry Sandusky (the one with a “G”) goes straight to the top of my list.

Would that I could maintain my sense of humor and faith in humanity in the face of such ugliness.
