Could we at least live in mortal fear of something that actually exists?

Gun sales are soaring across the country. The FBI reported earlier this week requests for background checks skyrocketed 20 percent on Black Friday over the same day last year. A noted gun rights advocate says zombies are just one reason why…. “There is I guess, you would call it a cottage industry that’s sprung up in the last couple of years,” Dave Workman of the Second Amendment Foundation and editor of The Gun Mag said in an interview with Ross and Burbank. He’s not kidding…. “A lot of people appear to be really enthralled by this. I’ve seen lines of zombie targets, I know one or two ammunition companies have introduced boxes, lines of cartridges they called zombie cartridges, shotgun shells and rifle shells.”

Americans live in fear of all manner of things: terrorists, criminals, drug addicts, ex-spouses, bears; who would have thought that one of our biggest fears is something that doesn’t even exist: the undead.

Yeah, I suppose that would explain why “The Walking Dead” is so popular…but buying guns and ammunition to protect ourselves from something that exists only in the fevered imaginations of screenwriters?

Of course, we’re talking about Americans here, the same (not exactly) Ph.D. candidates who made a run on gun stores when they somehow convinced themselves (with the help of NRA President Wayne LaPierre) that Barack Obama was going to take their guns.

In Virginia, for example, gun ownership soared 73% between 2006-2011. Over the same period gun related violent crimes actually fell 24 percent.

There was no indication that anyone tracked incidences of zombie attacks in Virginia.

I’d say something about the collective IQ and ability to maintain a grip on reality of the American Sheeple…but these are the same folks who consider “Dancing With The Stars” and “The Bachelorette” to be the apotheosis of the cinematic arts.

For those of you who really are worried about the (alleged) coming zombie apocalypse, I’ll leave you with sage advice from the immortal G. Gordon Liddy:

“HEAD SHOTS, PEOPLE!! HEAD SHOTS!!”
