Ted Nugent: Chief spokesman for the National Wang Dang Sweet Poontang Association

THE WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD

(apologies to Keith Olbermann)

Ted Nugent

Detroit-born southern rockabilly Ted Nugent isn’t known for moderation, but from the sound of his latest comments, the re-election of President Barack Obama (D) has made him ever more extreme. Speaking to fans during an NBC-sponsored gun show, Nugent said that Obama “is attempting to re-implement the tyranny of King George that we escaped from in 1776,” adding: “If you want another Concord bridge, I’ve got some buddies.”…. The comment was a reference to the Battle of Concord, in which a British soldier broke a standoff and fired upon assembled American militiamen, in what later became known as “the shot heard around the world” that helped launch the Revolutionary War. He added that Obama “hires, appoints and associates with communists,” and that he’s “an evil, dangerous man who hates America and hates freedom. And we need to fix this as soon as possible.”…. Speaking to conspiracy website World Net Daily earlier in January, the National Rifle Association board member said he believes a new era of civil rights is dawning — one in which gun lovers must become “the Rosa Parks.”

You’d think that the NRA, a once-reasonable organization taken over by paranoid conspiracy theorists and gun nuts in 1977, would recognize the need to be a bit more judicious about who they choose to be board members. After all, for most nonprofits, board members are often the face of the organization. Most sound organizations with even the barest shred of PR (and common) sense would want board members who could help them broaden their appeal and with it raise funds.

Of course, no sane, reasonable person would describe the NRA as sane, sound, and/or judicious. That would explain their selection of Ted Nugent, who’s to rational, reasoned debate what Ted Bundy was to stable relationships, to their board of directors. Was the ready for a board member who’s threatened violent insurrection? Most nonprofit organizations would have a serious problem with a board member who’s arguably committed treason on several occasions over the years. The NRA evidently celebrates traitors…because in their world, extremism in the defense of gun rights is no crime (apologies to Barry Goldwater).

If you look at the NRA leadership cadre, Nugent fits right in. He’s at least as zealous and politically tone deaf as Wayne LaPierre and the rest of the moral midgets in the NRA’s executive suite. He doesn’t care who he offends, he’s intellectually and ideologically inflexible, and he considers those who disagree with him to be un-American. Oh, and he believes the 2nd Amendment to be inviolate, unalterable, and sacrosanct. Nugent, like so many gun nuts, believes that the 2nd Amendment allows Americans to purchase and possess any weaponry they want and can afford. By that logic, Americans could have an M-60 Abrams tank parked in their driveway if they so desire. That Nugent takes such a ridiculously broad view of the 2nd Amendment (interesting how he gloss right over the “well-regulated militia” part) is in line with the NRA’s intransigence. Though he’d be loathe to admit it, that intransigence is largely responsible for massacres like Aurora and Sandy Hook.

It takes a good deal of hubris, and no small amount of chutzpah, to be able to equate gun nuts with Rosa Parks. Then again, Ted Nugent is Just. That. Arrogant…which makes him the perfect spokesman and board member for the NRA.
