Today's nominee for "Headline of the Year"

Dobson on Obama’s Reelection: ‘Nearly Everything I Have Stood for these Past 35 Years Went Down to Defeat’

[T]he election is over and we have a president who often ignores the Constitution and imposes dictatorial powers on the American people. Some people believe, and I am one of them, that Barack Obama is the worst president in American history. Pundits are scrambling to explain what happened and offering advice for the future. Karl Rove and others are telling the nation that conservatives need to abandon their long held moral beliefs, such as opposition to abortion, and become more like liberals. They have said, “We will never win another election unless our party develops a bigger tent.” Being interpreted, that means political parties should stay away from the moral and social issues. Those controversial topics, they say, just drive voters away because at the end of the day, “It’s the economy, stupid.” There we go again!

I (as much as is reasonable) try to respect the relgious beliefs of others. However, that goes out the window for intolerant religious bigots who dismiss and devalue the religious/ideological orientation of those who don’t share their narrow intolerance. Few trolls on the Religious Right fill this bill better than James Dobson, who’s to the teachings of Jesus Christ was Cold Stone Creamery is to a healthy diet.

My nominees for “Headline of the Year” normally lean toward the weird, the silly, or my favorite- human stupidity. I’m not certain that religious bigotry, intolerance, and zealotry constitute human stupidity, but it’s close enough for me. Dobson is, for my money, one of the most narrow, hateful, intolerant, and self-righteous excuses for a Christian the Religious Right has to offer. Anything that makes him feel as if his world’s coming apart is A-OK by me.

Dobson’s problem (well, his biggest one) is that he simply can’t stomach the idea that Americans voted for a world view more Liberal than his own narrow, “Kill-‘em-all-let-Go-sort-‘em-out” flavor of Christianity. Combine that with a hefty dose of racism and zealotry, and you can understand why Dobson is “enjoying” a well-deserved Maalox moment.

I normally kid myself into believing that I’m not about reveling in Schadenfreude, but in Dobson’s case, I’ll forgo the self-delusion. Few things put a smile faster than seeing an intolerant bigot get his comeuppance. I plan on taking a few laps in the Schadenfreude Express and doing a few 360s on Dobson’s front lawn.

The sad aspect of Dobson’s “suffering” is that he’s allowed to spew his hateful bastardization of Christ’s teachings virtually unchallenged. What you hear from good and decent mainstream Christians is…crickets. That these folks don’t stand up to Dobson’s bullying and hate speech is unconscionable. Meanwhile, the “Christians” getting the most attention are the haters, the bigots, the zealots, the misogynists, and the Dominionist Theocrats who’d love nothing better than to turn America into a “Christian” dictatorship in which they alone would use their interpretation of Biblical principles to rule without question or recourse.

Memo to Dobson: cry me a river.
