Cross-Dressing, Porn Store-Owning Catholic Priest Busted in Meth Ring

A cross-dressing Catholic priest, who had been suspended by church officials after he was found to be having sex with men in the rectory, was arrested by police for allegedly dealing crystal meth. The arrest occurred January 3, some seven months after Monsignor Kevin Wallin had been relieved of his duties at St. Augustine Cathedral in Bridgeport, Connecticut (the Roman Catholic Diocese of Bridgeport was still paying him a stipend, according to reports. During his post-priesthood life, the 61-year-old bought a porn shop called “Land of Oz” that sells sex toys and X-rated DVDs.
I understand that doing the Lord’s work is not always a very…uh, remunerative pursuit…unless you’re a televangelist, and even then you have to have a schtick. Finding a way to supplement one’s income is, of course, as old as the Republic. The fact that a Catholic Priest had a second job hardly seems newsworthy. It’s the nature of Msgr. Wallin’s moonlighting that’s attracting a lot of attention…well, that and a few of his very interesting hobbies.
Wallin, who’s been dubbed “Monsignor Meth,” doesn’t seem to be one to let his vows keep him from getting into all manner of non-priestly trouble. Give the Monsignor credit; he’s a resourceful sort. Selling meth, cross-dressing, have sex with other men in the rectory, AND owning a porn shop. Wallin was a man called to serve the Lord in some pretty…um, unusual ways. Fortunately for us, there story gets even better.
In every profession there are those less devoted to their vocation than in stretching the edge of the envelope. This testing the elasticity of the rules is often a difficult thing to keep a handle on. Things like greed, addiction, and lust tend to resist efforts, no matter how well meant, tend to resist being reigned in and kept under wraps. Msgr. Wallin seems to have lost his moral compass (and his ability to keep a low profile) somewhere along the way. I suppose that would be the short explanation for Wallin having sex with men in the church registry, selling meth, AND owning a porn shop (giving a whole new meaning to “come to Jesus”).
On the other hand, you do kinda hafta admire a guy willing to work hard. It seems Msgr. Walling was after his piece of the American Dream…only to find out that, in the end, that dream owned him.
Oh, and congratulations to the Bridgeport diocese for doing their level best to cover up their rogue priest. Well played…but then y’all have some practice at glossing over problems within your midst, don’t you?
