Erin and I returned yesterday from a long weekend on the Oregon Coast. Four days and three nights in Lincoln City in a house with no wireless, radio, or television; I know, it was pretty primitive. At least I could post things from and get news on my iPhone. Hey, I wasn’t about to go back to the Stone Age, knowhutimean?
It was interesting to be without television, radio, wireless access for several days. It turns out one can survive quite nicely in a something resembling unplugged state. I guess that’s why it’s called “vacation,” eh?? You’re actually forced to interact with your partner, because they’re aren’t the usual array of electronic distractions available. For three days, We talked, walked on the beach, hung out with friends, ate, and read…a lot. I went through three books and was well into my fourth. No online time, just a lot of time revisiting what should always be most important, and it was nice to experience each other without all the distractions waiting for us back in Portland.
I so seldom allow myself the opportunity to unplug and step away from it all. It’s easy to fall into the habit- indeed, the trap- of always having the world at the end of my keyboard. For four days, though, I barely knew what was going on in the world outside Lincoln City…and I found that I didn’t much care.
As we left Lincoln City for home yesterday, I had but one question: why don’t we do this more often?
