Today's nominee for the 2013 Derp Award: Jim Hoft

Derp- A simple, undefined reply when an ignorant comment or action is made. Brought to life in the South Park series, when Mr. Derp made a guest apperance at South Park Elementary as the chef for a day, followed by hitting himself in the head with a hammer and exclaiming “Derp!”

WASHINGTON, March 5, 2013 - Accuracy in Media will honor…Jim Hoft of Gateway Pundit for his groundbreaking contributions to New Media in a ceremony taking place at the 2013 Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) on March 14th. The Reed Irvine award is named for AIM’s founder, America’s first media watchdog…. Irvine praised Jim Hoft, the proprietor of GatewayPundit.com. “His dedication to a free America and his personal devotion to democracy that has led him to cover freedom movements from inside Iran to the streets of Azerbaijan, have propelled GatewayPundit into one of the country’s top resources for right-of-center news and commentary.”

Things are different inside the Conservative media echo chamber. You and I might expect journalists to deal in facts and provable truth, but the denizens of the Conservative media echo chamber are not burdened by those rules. Truth is a fungible concept, something that can and should be readily adapted to fit the desired narrative. Few are less burdened by truth and expectations of accuracy that Jim Hoft, whom Charles Johnson of Little Green Footballs charitably refers to as “The Dumbest Man on the Internet.” Hoft, one of the dimmest of the bulbs at Gateway Pundit, is in Johnson’s eyes

a borderline illiterate religious fanatic with absolutely no journalistic standards, who promotes every single fake outrage and demented conspiracy theory that bubbles up from the wingnut base, lies outright for partisan reasons, has a nauseatingly vicious and racist comments section, and is wrong more often than any other blogger in the history of the web, yet never, ever admits or corrects a mistake.

Right wing journalism at its finest!

Why is Johnson so down on Hoft? It might have something to do with Hoft receiving the “Accuracy in Media” Award at CPAC. Evidently, “accuracy” doesn’t mean “getting the facts right,” but rather “doing whatever it takes to support the Conservative narrative.”

Matt Drudge loves Hoft because he writes the story of fantastical anti-Obama conspiracy rants that Right-wingers believe without question. Hey, why would any self-respecting Right-wing “journalist” allow the truth to get in the way of perfectly good propaganda?

Who knew the government is stockpiling ammunition to use against American citizens? They’re not, of course, but Hoft’s never been one to allow the truth to place limits on his journalistic brilliance. Even if it means using a survivalist blog as a primary source and making the rest up as he goes.

Oh, and thanks to Hoft leaving no stone unturned we now know that Bo, Barack Obama’s Dog, has his own motorcade…despite the automatic budget cuts required by the sequester.

“The President and Bo, the Obama family dog, ride in the presidential motorcade en route to PetSmart in Alexandria, Va. The President bought Bo some Christmas gifts at the pet store then walked nearby to Best Buy to purchase gifts for his daughters.” (Business Insider)

The White House will close its doors to tourists next week. But Bo the Obama Dog gets to keep his motorcade.

Hoft’s “scoop” has no basis in reality, and whatever facts he employed are purely coincidental and mangled beyond recognition, but when you’re a Conservative “journalist,” the truth isn’t the important thing. No, what’s of primary concern is what you can convince the American Sheeple is true. The truth may well set you free, but you’d never know that by reading Hoft’s pitiful journalistic offerings. Frankly, 500 monkeys at 500 typewriters could produce better, more truthful, and more accurate reporting.

Then again, “Accuracy in Media” doesn’t mean quite what it used to, does it?
