Today in Weapons Grade Stupid

(Apologies and full credit to Weapons Grade Stupid)

I’ve remained silent on the Boston Marathon bombing for a couple of reasons. The first is simply out of respect for the victims and their families and loved ones. I see nothing positive that could emerge from me opinionizing on the cause of and/or reason for such a monstrous and unimaginable tragedy. Besides, there’s already too much noise out there as it is. Nothing good can come from me contributing to the Sturm und Drang.

The second is that there just isn’t much hard information to talk about. Beyond the speculation, the inaccurate reporting, the breathless relaying of rumor as solid fact, what could I possibly add from here on the West Coast? We all want resolution- a suspect, an arrest, a reason for the attack- but the reality is that these things generally aren’t resolved overnight.

I’m tired of watching and listening to media talking heads relaying “information” and speculation as if they actually know what they’re talking about. With each passing day, bits and pieces of information emerge, but resolution and closure aren’t things arrived at instantaneously. The pointless speculation and volume of verbal vomit has been stunning in it’s vacuousness and meaninglessness.

I have little doubt that someone will be identified and ultimately held accountable for the bombing. Until that happens, there’s really nothing meaningful I can add. I refuse to contribute to the willfully vacant, misleading, and weapons-grade stupidity that has engulfed most of the media. Enough is enough.

Let’s stop dancing to the beat of the media coverage (“We have no hard information, but that’s not going to stop from engaging in pointless, and ultimately inaccurate speculation.”) and allow law enforcement to do what they do. At least they’re focused on following the evidence to find the truth. In the meantime, we should be marveling at Boston’s strength and unity of purpose. I hope that will continue.
