Another reason why every day is Gun Appreciation Day

BOISE — Police say the victim of an accidental shooting on Friday has died and the man who killed him has been arrested.

Derick L. Sedivy, 23, of Boise is charged with felony involuntary manslaughter in connection with the Friday night shooting. He also faces a weapons enhancement for use of a deadly weapon.

The Ada County coroner has identified the victim as 20-year-old Austin Blankenburg of Kuna. He died from a gunshot wound to the head. The cause of death is listed as homicide.

Officers say it appears Sedivy accidentally shot a relative around 10:19 p.m. Friday at a gathering in a home near South Orchard and Cassia streets. Blankenburg was transported to Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise, where he was pronounced dead.

The Boise Police Department says alcohol appears to be a factor in the shooting.

Boise Police detectives, Ada County prosecuting attorneys, and the Ada County Coroner’s Office continue to investigate the death.

Sedivy appeared in Ada County court Monday afternoon. His bond was set at $50,000. He has since posted bail and been released from jail. He is due back in court on May 24 for a preliminary hearing.
