Right-wing Christians: Keeping it KKKlassy

I suppose I could be accused of being naive and unqualified to hold forth on this subject since I don’t believe in an Invisible Friend in the Sky. I was subjected to enough Lutheran Sunday School as a child to understand that love, tolerance, and charity are core values of Christianity. That was then; it seems today’s Christians no longer feel themselves bound by such touchy-feely “Liberal, anti-Christian” ideas. No longer is it about showing tolerance for others who may not believe as you do. It’s not about trying to lead a Christ-like life and being a model for those around you. And it’s certainly not about putting up with godless Libruls who’d force America to live under Sharia law- yeah, I’m talking about Barack Obama.

That said, would it be too much to expect Christians at the 2014 Faith and Freedom Conference to have at least the barest minimum of class and dignity? Evidently so. Four words should disabuse an observer of the notion that Radical Christians will conduct themselves in accordance with their faith: Barack Obama urinal cakes. Yes, now you can take out your frustration with our America-hating Commie Muslim President and drain your bladder at the same time. And it HAS nothing to do with the President’s race!

Yeah, right….

I imagine those behind the urinal cakes think they’ve stumbled on a humorous way for Christians to express their displeasure with this President and his failure to hew to their narrow, fear- and ignorance-based doctrine. Here’s the thing the trolls fail to understand, though: being a Christian doesn’t ipso facto translate to an arch-Conservative ideology. Jesus wasn’t political, though some of his followers are convinced he was a Conservative Republican. They’re happy to make politics and their flavor of Christianity one and the same. Being a Christian doesn’t mean a believer must be one with Conservatism; many Christians consider themselves Liberals, and support things like same-sex marriage, common sense gun control, working for peace, and gay rights. That doesn’t make them less Christian; it just means they’re actually trying to live their faith…unlike too many Conservative Christians, who too often mistake their fear and prejudice for piety.

As if we needed more evidence that Conservative Christianity has anything at all to do with the teachings of Jesus Christ….
