Because God is Love...and we'll destroy you to prove it

We know who you are. We know where you live. We know where you work. You’re little group of devil worshippers isn’t welcome here. Let the love and message of the Lord filter through you and may you escape from the eternal damnation that you have condemned you and you’re innocent children to. Repent you’re Satanistic ways or you will find that the Lord works in VERY mysterious ways. You are against God and are not welcome in this area and we WILL spread his message to the hearts and minds of your innocent children. To deny His word to your children is abuse, and if you do not learn to love Him and His word then we will have no choice but to take action to protect your children from your devil-enabling ways. Do not even try to report this to the police — we are every where and His work will be done in His name thru us, the true beleivers…. We will stop you any way we have too (sic). He has mysterious ways. Keep you’re (sic) family close.

I’m not scared of God (I just don’t believe in Him)…but sometimes His fan club can be pretty damned frightening. The combination of a loving, benevolent God and His hateful, self-righteous, intolerant followers is something that just doesn’t compute. Nor can I wrap my head around the idea that someone could threaten to harm another human being simply because they aren’t “enlightened” enough to believe in the same flavor of Imaginary Friend. How sick do you have to be to believe that someone who doesn’t believe as you do is worthy only of destruction?

As if I need to answer that….

This story is representative of pretty much everything that’s wrong with modern religion…and I’m not limiting my criticism to Christianity. Islam and Judaism also have their share of pipe bomb-vested crazies; it’s a religion thing, not just a Christian thing. That the same strain of Talibanism is extant in the Christian church is neither new nor particularly unusual. Even so, it is unusual- and pretty sick- for so-called “Christians” to threaten physical violence against those whose beliefs they reject. Especially since it would seem to go against everything their flavor of Imaginary Friend stands for.

To his credit, Jon Jeffels, the recipient of the threats, has taken the high road. Of course, it didn’t take much to come off as more mature than the knuckle-dragging troglodytes who left the threatening letter in his mailbox. Jeffels reached out on Facebook and offered an olive branch of sorts, offering to have a reasoned, rational discussion about any perceived differences…which is like offering to have a beer with ISIS/ISIL crazies. If you’re leaving anonymous threats in someone’s mailbox, odds are you’re unlikely to be amenable to a civil sit-down exchange of ideas.

Given the tone of the letter, I suspect the ninnies behind it aren’t favorably disposed to anything that doesn’t involve complete, total, and immediate capitulation to their beliefs. Otherwise, why would they feel the need to anonymously threaten someone whose only “crime” seems to be not believing in their flavor of Imaginary Friend?

I have family members who will tell me that it’s not the character of God that’s in question, but that of the ninnies who believe fear and intimidation to be effective witnessing techniques. That may well be the case, but I still want no part of a belief system that allows its adherents to threaten physical violence…or worse…against those who don’t share their beliefs. God may be love, but His fan club can be anything but.

And people wonder why I don’t believe in God….
