Today's nominee for Headline of the Year: Someone probably shouldn't plan on getting laid tonight

Men’s rights activist: Civilization fails when women and their vaginas are allowed in the workplace

The founder of A Voice for Men, Paul Elam, went on “ManStream Media” to discuss how women have forever ruined the workplace and ended the possibility of humanity ever doing anything “excellent” again…. “There’s just a different way that men do things with each other,” he said, “and it results in excellence. In civilization. In the aqueducts being built. To people landing on the moon and cures being found to disease.”…. Elam offered as an example of such excellence what happens at a construction site when some “newbie comes in and accidentally pulls the trigger on the nail gun and plants one in his leg. They’re not going to rush around him crying, they’ll say, ‘That’ll teach his ass. When he comes back to the job, he won’t do that again.’ But they will get him medical care.”…. “I’m sorry, ladies,” he continued, “but if we want society to advance, we need to leave men alone to do their work — to do their thing and be with each other to get things done. Because that’s how it works.”

Right; the sooner women stop trying to be men and remember their place, the better off we’ll all be. Yes, we may live in a modern, high-tech world, but men are still expected to kill the buffalo and women are still expected to pop out babies and raise children. Same as it ever was.

Except that here in the 21st century, it’s difficult to understand how such rampant sexism and belittling of women still exists. The “men’s rights” movement seems largely a collection of men unable to recognize that they’re not God’s gift to women. As a male, I’ll admit that it would be great to have a woman wait on me hand and foot…but that expectation is as ridiculous as it is unfair to women. The expectation seems to be, “I have a penis, therefore I make the rules”…which is, of course, prima facie absurd…unless you’re Paul Elam.

The arrogance inherent in the “if we want society to advance, we need to leave men alone to do their work” argument is truly stunning. Evidently, having a vagina disqualifies one from doing the heavy lifting necessary “to get things done.” Women are not men…and vice versa. The argument for absolute equality is neither rational nor reasonable. That said, the mere fact of being in possession of a penis should not ipso facto connote the right to a superior position upon an individual. Women can be construction workers, police officers, and soldiers. They may do things differently, but there’s absolutely no reason they should be held to be incapable of doing the same job every bit as well as a man. OK, so perhaps they can’t toss a caber like a man or bench press as much weight…but since when is physical strength the measure of a person…unless a member of the men’s rights movement is doing the measuring?

“‘Hi!’” Elam interjected, pretending to be a woman, “‘I have a vagina and a whole new set of rules! Never mind what’s worked for thousands of years, because I’m female and I know how to make 9,000 people work together to build a bridge across two miles of river!’”

Something may have worked for thousands of years, but does that mean it must continue to be done the same way ad infinitum, ad nauseum? Why does the presence of a woman constitute evidence of a breakdown in the system? Why can’t a female engineer supervise 9,000 people working together to build a bridge across two miles of river…and do it every bit as well as a man? Sure, testosterone gives men an edge when it comes to tasks requiring brawn; that’s hardly breaking news. When it comes to tasks requiring brain power, having a penis doesn’t automatically tilt the playing field in favor of men.

It doesn’t mean having to be a dick, either…but I don’t think Paul Elam and the rest of the men’s rights movement got that memo.
