You know Hell has frozen over when I agree with Hugh Hewitt...about anything

MY NEW HERO

Hugh Hewitt

Yesterday, Donohue was interviewed by longtime conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt. For those unfamiliar with him, he is a law professor at the same school as the Chairman of the National Organization For Marriage, and has frequently had NOM Chair John Eastman on his show. Hewitt is a very conservative Roman Catholic, and has a strong social media following. Donohue no doubt assumed he was walking into friendly territory. He was not…. “Bill, I’ve often agreed with you over the years, because like you, I’m an orthodox Catholic, went to confession on Saturday, Mass on Saturday night,” Hewitt, about a minute into the interview, told Donohue. “I don’t believe, except maybe perhaps vis-à-vis Dennis Prager, I’ve committed any mortal sins in the interim, so I think I’m in good standing with the Church right now. And I have to say I’m appalled, and I’m embarrassed, and I’m urging you to rethink this.”

One of the worst, most insensitive, and just plain crass reactions to the Charlie Hebdo massacre in Paris was penned by Bill Donohue of the Catholic League (which is basically Donohue, a keyboard, and his massive ego). I wrote about it at some length yesterday, and left it at that, believing my voice to be merely a cry in the wilderness. Turns out I may have been slightly mistaken, because Donohue’s crass inhumanity was noticed by Hugh Hewitt, who ground him to dust during an interview.

Don’tcha just LOVE karma?? It’s too bad it was a radio interview; I would have LOVED to watch Donohue squirm as he was embarrassed by what he thought was going to be a very friendly interview.

The thing is, I’m no fan of Hewitt, not by a long shot. Hewitt’s a very Conservative Catholic with ties to the National Organization for Marriage. Ideologically speaking, he and I inhabit different universes…but it’s hard not to respect him for taking Donohue to take for being such a heartless moron and a poor example of Catholicism. Donohue blamed the victims of the Charlie Hebdo massacre for being complicit in their own murder, as if advocating for free speech and expression was somehow a crime worthy of death.

So much for displaying compassion and Christian charity, eh?

Then again, this is what you do when you’re Bill Donohue and you’re a joyless, heartless, self-righteous, shriveled excuse for a human being lacking even the barest shred of decency and kindness. Not only did Donohue blame the victims, essentially spitting on them before their corpses were cold, he doubled down on the criticism the next day. No reasonable person would use “classy” and “Catholic” in the same sentence when describing this miserable excuse for humanity.

He seems nice, huh? What a ringing endorsement for Catholicism and the love of Jesus Christ.

“You blamed the victim before their bodies were cold,” Hewitt accused. “Everyone listening to this show believes that you are blaming the victim before their bodies were cold. It’s deeply embarrassing to me as a Catholic.”

Hewitt also accused Donohue of being a “bully,” of “lying,” of being an “embarrassment” to Catholics. He said Donohue’s comments on the attack on Charlie Hebdo are a “scandal on the church.”

Donohue IS a bully, a liar, and yes, probably an embarrassment to Catholics and the Catholic Church. Not being Catholic, I wouldn’t know about that last part, but I can’t imagine the Church is particularly happy with someone who purports to represent Catholics and yet does so in such a hateful, disrespectful manner. The victims had families, friends, people who loved them…and at such a moment, Bill Donohue is going to dishonor them and insult their loved ones by blaming those murdered in cold blood?

I agree with virtually NOTHING Hugh Hewitt has to say on virtually any topic or issue. That said, I do have to express my admiration for someone so committed to their faith that they’d call out someone who demonstrates themselves such a callous, heartless representative of it. It was a thing of beauty…Donohue experiencing my two favorite words: “karma” and “schadenfreude.”

I almost feel guilty going back to virulently disagreeing with Hewitt on virtually everything he stands for and espouses….
