An American Christian preacher saw the deaths of over 2,500 in Nepal as a fabulous opening to both undermine their faith and sell his own. In case you hadn’t guessed, “Religious Freedom” only applies to one religion in the USA.
The death toll in Nepal has passed 5,000, thousands more are injured, devastation is everywhere, and close to a million children are in dire need of assistance. A moment for compassion, right? Not when you’re Tony Miano, for whom suffering, death, and destruction is just another God-given opportunity to bring people the Truth and the Light that is the Good News of Jesus Christ. Never having heard of Miano previously, I don’t know a thing about him, but if he’s trying to prove his Christians bona fides…well, let’s just call this an epic fail, shall we? Miano could be expounding at length about how he’ll be praying for the people of Nepal and organizing a drive to collect donations. Instead, he opines about “pagan temples” and how the people of Nepal need to repent and receive Christ. Being a Christian doesn’t mean one is immune to being an asshole.
If you're using the #NepalEarthquake as a religious-conversion opportunity, congratulations on climbing the Mt. Everest of assholery.

Here’s a news flash that might take Miano by surprise: people are suffering and dying in Nepal…and it has nothing to do with their belief (or lack of same) in your flavor of Imaginary Friend. Instead of sitting in judgment of people who have far bigger problems at the moment than the status of their immortal soul, how about doing something to alleviate their suffering? How about doing something along the lines of what the Jesus Christ you purport to revere actually taught? How about actually doing something positive instead of sitting in judgment of a people you know nothing about? How about actually LIVING your faith for once?
Here’s a thought for Pastor Miano: If you can’t be bothered to lift a finger to help those in desperate need of assistance, would it be too much to ask that you dial back the smug, self-satisfied arrogance? Seeing as how leading a Christ-like life appears to be beyond your apparently minimal capabilities, do you really want people thinking you’re a world class asshole? Or do you simply just suck as a human being?
