The gun control debate is over; the Proudly Closed-Minded Gun Control Foes have triumphed

In retrospect Sandy Hook marked the end of the US gun control debate. Once America decided killing children was bearable, it was over.

  • Dan Hodges

It’s as tired and predictable as it is inhuman and barbaric. A madman with a gun murders several innocent people- women, children…it no longer matters- shattering lives and dreams, and we’re left to wonder. Why did it happen? How could it have been prevented? What can we do to keep it from happening again? The truth is that we ask these questions secure in the knowledge the answers really don’t matter, because no matter what we think we may learn, nothing can or will change.

As a society, we’ve ceded the moral high ground to Proudly Closed-Minded Gun Control Foes © who believe the problem is that there aren’t ENOUGH guns in America and that we should be able to carry them any time and any place. Though there are 200 MILLION more guns in this country than anywhere else in the world, there are those who won’t rest until every man, woman, and child is packing heat. They tell us with a straight face and no hint of irony that an armed society is a polite society…when in truth and armed society is nothing if not scared sh-tless. They’ll argue that MOR GUNZ!!! can only create more safety. They assume that humans will as a matter of course act rationally and appropriately in a shooting situation, as if it’s the most natural thing in the world…when in fact it’s an incredibly jarring and disorienting experience. Even trained soldiers often don’t fire their weapons in combat, so how is it an untrained or poorly-trained civilian can be expected to act calmly and rationally, dispatching a miscreant with no muss or fuss? OF COURSE a Good Guy with a gun will triumph over a Bad Guy with a gun; it’s the natural order of things.

If our future didn’t seem clear after the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary, you need to understand the consequences of our inaction. We’ve allowed Proudly Closed-Minded Gun Control Foes © to control the debate, because we refuse to stand up to them and, even worse, refuse to hold our elected officials (most of whom have been bought and sold by the gun lobby) accountable. By our inaction, Sandy Hook demonstrated that the massacre of children was an acceptable cost of freedom. Once we crossed that bridge, it was clear the silent majority who believe in common sense gun control no longer have a voice. We ceded the floor to Proudly Closed-Minded Gun Control Foes ©, and now they get to enjoy their sick, twisted view of America as a country where guns are considered of far more value than human life.

Congratulations, America; when the next massacre happens (and the one after that, ad infinitum, ad nauseum)- and it will happen- we can all enjoy a homeland made “safer” by the easy availability of guns. Because once Proudly Closed-Minded Gun Control Foes © decided there could be no limits- and we declined to stand up to them- our fate was sealed. Now that we’ve accepted the killing of children as the price of our freedom, we get to enjoy an America that experiences a mass shooting on average once a week.

Don’tcha just LOVE freedom??
