It seems low-information voters elect low-information legislators...especially in Tennessee

THE WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD

(apologies to Keith Olbermann)

TN state Sen. Mae Beavers and state Rep. Mark Pody

On Thursday two state Republican lawmakers unveiled their answer: a bill that they believe voids the Supreme Court decision and continues to define marriage under Tennessee law as a union between a man and a woman…. “Natural marriage between one (1) man and one (1) woman as recognized by the people of Tennessee remains the law in Tennessee, regardless of any court decision to the contrary,” the bill states…. “Any court decision purporting to strike down natural marriage, including (a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision), is unauthoritative, void, and of no effect.”…. “Whereas, unlawful orders, no matter their source — whether from a military commander, a federal judge, or the United States Supreme Court — are and remain unlawful, and should be resisted.”

Sometimes, I find myself wondering if there really shouldn’t be a test one must pass in order to become a state legislator and #$%& with the laws of a statue. You know, a “You must be THIS intelligent in order to propose and vote on legislation” sort of thing. Seems reasonable, right? I mean, do we really want stupid people passing laws (And by “stupid,” I mean truly, deeply brain-dead Conservatives who lack even the most basic knowledge of how guv’mint works)?

It seems that two Tennessee legislators who really, really, REALLY don’t like same-sex marriage think they’ve figured out a way to nullify the Supreme Court decision that said two dudes or two chicks can now get married. They figured they’d just pass a law, which they call the “Natural Marriage Defense Act,” which- POOF!!- will magically make the abomination before God that is same-sex marriage disappear in Tennessee. Except that there’s just one little problem- it’s called the “Supreme Court” for a reason, that reason being that their decisions supercede any other court in the land. Their rulings are the law of the land that no state legislature can, no matter how hard it may try, overturn and/or nullify.

Could their effort be successful? In a word, “NO,” but they might just succeed in dragging Tennessee into a long, drawn-out court fight that would cost the state’s taxpayers untold millions. So much for responsible government and “fiscal conservatism,” eh??

Anyway, this should be fun, in part simply because Mae Beavers is a supremely stupid woman. In 2011, she submitted a bill that would require all presidential candidates to submit a “long form birth certificate” in order to be eligible, though she admitted she had no fucking idea what a “long form birth certificate” was.

This is a clear case of people with NO earthly idea of how government is supposed to work being put in charge of said government. Truly, the inmates are running the asylum…and their ignorance could wind up costing Tennessee taxpayers a fair amount of money. Now THAT’S some fine Conservative leadership, no??

Of course, I’d be remiss if I didn’t place responsibility where it truly lies- with the voters who elected those two intellectual and moral midgets. If their constituents did feel Beavers and Pody best reflect their values, they’d still be managing Dairy Queens…or whatever menial job they held before being elevated to the Statehouse.

How can we expect legislators to understand how guv’mint works if their constituents don’t expect it of them? Stupid and ill-informed is as stupid and ill-informed does, no?
