The Bundy family of Nevada joined with hard-core militiamen Saturday to take over the headquarters of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, vowing to occupy the remote federal outpost 30 miles southeast of Burns for years. The occupation came shortly after an estimated 300 marchers — militia and local citizens both — paraded through Burns to protest the prosecution of two Harney County ranchers, Dwight Hammond Jr. and Steven Hammond, who are to report to prison on Monday. Among the occupiers is Ammon Bundy, son of Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy, and two of his brothers. Militia members at the refuge claimed they had as many as 100 supporters with them. The refuge, federal property managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, was closed and unoccupied for the holiday weekend. In phone interviews from inside the occupied building Saturday night, Ammon Bundy and his brother, Ryan Bundy, said they are not looking to hurt anyone. But they would not rule out violence if police tried to remove them, they said.
In a move as stunningly pointless as it was unbelievably silly, a Right-wing militia affiliated with The Brotherhood of the Tiny Penis © stormed and overran the locked and empty headquarters of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge near Burns, OR, over the weekend. In a brave and patriotic embarrasingly overcooked attack intended to display their impotence and inflated sense of self-importance commitment to freedom and liberty, militia members took over a symbol of government tyranny an unoccupied federally-owned building in the middle of nowhere.
Promising to hold their breath until they turn blue stay for years if need be, the immature crybabies brave patriots made it clear they’re committed to seeing that they’re given binkies, warm milk, and cookies their demands are met.
Wow…so a group of brave, patriotic ‘Murricans assaulted and overran an unoccupied federal building…in (almost literally) the middle of nowhere? Way to show your commitment to and willingness to die for your ideals, eh? Perhaps next they’ll attack a Bureau of Land Management (BLM) office closed for a long holiday weekend? Maybe an after-hours frontal assault on an IRS office, followed by a sneak attack on a Dairy Queen?
Is The Brotherhood of the Tiny Penis © really so petulant and attention-starved that they’d undertake what can only be described as a pointlessly impotent and illegal symbolic act of defiance? Did someone not get their nap?? Isn’t it about time the media owned up to the truth and called this takeover what it is? Plain and simple, it’s domestic terrorism.
Ammon Bundy posted a video on his Facebook page calling on patriots from across the country to report to the refuge - with their weapons.
The dramatic turn came after other militia groups had tried to dampen community concerns they meant trouble.
Brandon Curtiss, a militia leader from Idaho, told The Oregonian/OregonLive he knew nothing about the occupation. He helped organize Saturday’s protest and was at the Harney County Fairgrounds with dozens of other militia for a post-parade function. Another militia leader, BJ Soper, took to Facebook to denounce the occupation.
The occupation, and the protest leading up to it, were in support of southeastern Oregon ranchers Dwight Hammond and his son, Steve, who were convicted on federal arson charges stemming from range fires they set that burned BLM land. The Hammonds, while disagreeing with the case against them, have accepted their convictions and are committed to reporting to prison at the appointed time. They’ve pointedly refused the assistance offered by militia members, who nonetheless have decided to use the Hammonds to draw attention to their cause.
In reality, this latest illegal act of petulance is an attention-grabbing device and an attempt to provoke the federal government into a response. Truth be told, they’ve occupied a federal building of no strategic value in the middle of Oregon’s High Desert. There’s no reason why the federal government would need to react. All they really need to do- if they choose to do anything at all- is to block all exit routes and starve the brave, selfless patriots out…and arrest them as they emerge with their tails between their legs.
I do find it interesting that a White Right-wing militia occupies a federal building with little to no reaction from the mainstream media. If we called it what it is- an armed takeover by terrorists- the situation takes on a different hue…but they’re White Christians, so it’s just a bunch of good ol’ boys having fun and expressing their 1st Amendment rights…amiright??
Imagine for a moment the reaction if the headquarters of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuges had been overrun and occupied by a group of armed Muslims. The mainstream media would be on Defcon 5, with wall to wall 24/7 coverage, complete w/ satellite trucks, reporters, and other VERY SERIOUS PEOPLE on scene to expound on the grave risk the Homeland faces from Islamic terrorism.
Ah, but we should probably remind ourselves that White Christian patriots by definition can’t be terrorists, amiright??
Never mind that this sorry saga indicates that the biggest threat America faces isn’t from Islamic terrorists- it’s from terrorists who call themselves Christians. Yes, the group of miscreants and petulant children who invaded the headquarters of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge may be the modern-day equivalent of The Gang That Couldn’t Shoot Straight…but what happens if they open fire on law enforcement officers? Will the media finally refer to them as the terrorists they are…or will they (inaccurately) be portrayed as brave, selfless patriots standing their ground against a tyrannical government?
I’m guessing the hypocrisy will continue…along with disregard for the law. Remember, it’s only terrorism if you’re Muslim; you have a much better chance of getting away with it if you’re White and Christian.
