Time for a trip to the woodshed

To my chagrin, I’ve learned that two of my posts from yesterday were something less than 100% factual…something a quick trip to Snopes.com would have demonstrated. To say that I’m embarrassed wouldn’t begin to describe my feelings at the moment. Yes, it could perhaps be argued that they might be half right…but they were also at least half wrong, which to me is completely unacceptable. In both instances, a few short minutes invested in some basic fact-checking would have revealed the truth. That I didn’t make even that minimal investment is beyond embarrassing to me. I take great pride in being credible, and falling short of that mark means I’m not meeting the very same standards I hold others to.

Mea culpa.

That said, if I make a mistake, I like to think I can man up and accept responsibility. My normally crack fact-checking staff- me, myself, and I- is in the vast majority of cases spot on, but it’s an undertaking in which anything less than perfection is unacceptable. I’m not going to make a show of falling on my sword, but I will promise to redouble my efforts to ensure the work going out with my name on it is factual and correct. I can do better, I must do better…and I most certainly will.

I’m blessed to have readers looking out for me, especially since I’m judge, jury, and executioner. Mistakes can and do occasionally slip through the cracks. Perfection is a tough bar to reach, and every now and again a reader (especially my wife, Erin) is kind enough to point out mistakes. To say that I’m thankful for that wouldn’t begin to describe the depths of my gratitude.

I can do better, and I will do better. There will be mistakes- I’m human, after all- but I’ll redouble my efforts to keep them to a minimum. If my gentle reader does find a mistake, please feel free to email me (yuppieskum@gmail.com), contact me on Facebook, or via Twitter (@yuppieskum).

Thanks to my readers- the vast majority of whom I’ll never meet- for sticking with me for the past almost 15 years. I’m still having fun, and I still have a lot to say. I plan to continue doing what I have for lo, these many years…while doing a better, more thorough, and more conscientious job of fact-check.

Enjoy your Sunday. If you need me, I’ll be out collecting two of every living thing…’cuz the weather forecast here in Portland is truly ark-worthy.
