There's a time for well-deserved ridicule...and a time to lend a well-deserved helping hand

Rockets owner Leslie Alexander donated $500,000 to Houston mayor Sylvester Turner’s Greater Houston Storm Relief Fund. The Houston area has been hit with massive storms totaling billions of dollars in damages. The Rockets are encouraging fans to donate to the relief fund houstonrecovers.org.

I may not miss much about Houston (I know; quelle surprise, eh?), but in my 10+ years there I saw a number of flood events. Whether from heavy rain, tropical storms, or hurricanes, Houston’s soil and topography make it extraordinarily susceptible to flooding. The latest round of floods to hit Houston came after some areas received upwards of 18” in a 24-hour period. There’s simply nowhere for that much water to go…except into streets, creeks, and buildings.

Normally, I’d indulge in a “Man, I’m glad I don’t live there anymore” rant, but a lot of people are legitimately suffering. I’m grateful to live in a part of the country where temperate weather is the rule and a significant rain event is anything over an inch. OK, so Portland gets the occasional windstorm coming out of the Columbia Gorge to the East (and the odd snowstorm)…but that’s about as bad as things get here.

Right now Houston needs help. If you’re so inclined, you can start here to find out what you can do.
