From the "Department of Republican Cluelessness and Lack of Self-Awareness"....

Donald Trump Jr., son of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, decried elitism, Ivy League degrees and networks “of patronage and influence” while speaking at the Republican National Convention on Tuesday night. It was a difficult argument for the son of the billionaire presidential candidate to make. Then, shortly after Trump Jr. delivered his speech, a Twitter user named @kept_simple resurfaced [a] 2012 tweet[.] The term greenskeeper generally refers to a person responsible for taking care of a golf course. It’s not clear if this tweet was meant to be a joke. Even if it was, the sentiment behind it is not a good look for Trump Jr., who used his platform at the GOP convention to speak reverently about his father’s support for regular, working people ― the kinds of people who might be overlooked because they didn’t attend “fancy colleges.”

Few things are more amusing (and by “amusing,” I mean “grotesquely offensive and stunningly insensitive”) than the children of wealth and privilege trying to present themselves as “common folk. The idea of Trump the Younger decrying elitism, Ivy League educations, and good ol’ boy networks is laughable at best…and at worst a world class level of dishonesty and lack of self-awareness.

I don’t know about you, but having come from a decidedly middle-class family, we didn’t pal around with greenskeepers…because we didn’t have one on staff. Come to think of it, we didn’t have a staff. We had no one to take care of the things no one wanted to do; if we didn’t do it, it didn’t get done.

And we certainly didn’t have people passing up family weddings out of loyalty to us (and their paycheck).

It’s not as if Trump the Younger is the only pampered child of wealth and privilege to endeavor to portray themselves as “just folks.” What’s laughable is his stunning cluelessness when it comes to recognizing the choices some have to make when it comes to work and family. Did the family’s greenskeeper really decide to skip his sister’s wedding out of loyalty? Or was there a more immediate, perhaps more sinister, factor at work?

In Trump’s defense, he’s worked for much of what he’s achieved…but it’s not as if he began life at a disadvantage. He has a bachelor’s degree from Penn’s Wharton School of Business, and he’s had all the advantages being born into a very wealthy family could offer. I don’t begrudge him his success or wealth…but it does grate on me to hear him trying to portray himself and his father as men of the people, defender of downtrodden workers simply trying to make ends meet. More thoroughly offensive and dishonest bullshit would be difficult to find.

That Trump the Younger is actually one of the less offensive examples of Republican hypocrisy is a pretty sad indictment of a party that considers itself the rightful owner of America.
