Now, here are two words I'd never imagined ever being able to use in the same sentence- "Aryan satanist". Jason Paul Doty, who is indeed an Aryan satanist, was convicted today of the first-degree murder of his friend, Joseph McDowell. The charges stemmed from a police chase in which Doty, while attempting to flee Pima County sheriff's deputies, crashed his vehicle, killing McDowell.
McDowell, who is survived by his wife and daughter, was picked up by Doty before the April 9, 2000 crash near Picture Rocks, authorities said.
Prosecutors charged Doty with first-degree murder under the state's felony murder rule, which allows authorities to file murder charges against suspects if someone is killed while they are committing a felony.
In Doty's case, he also was charged with fleeing from a law enforcement vehicle, a felony.
"It's an accident resulting from your choice to run from the police," Superior Court Judge Frank Dawley said yesterday.
"But I don't think you intended to kill your friend," Dawley said.
Dawley also sentenced Doty to 8.75 years in prison for fleeing police and leaving the scene of an accident. Jurors convicted him on both additional felony charges.
Of course, I'm not at all sure what being an "Aryan satanist" has to do with anything, but it sure makes the story sound more interesting, doesn't it? And it's shorter than "incoherent, drug-addled, homicidal, schizophrenic child molester".
