The Eugene City Council Passes a Resolution Opposing the USA Patriot Act
One of the things I miss about living in Portland is the penchant for West Coast governmental bodies to pass totally meaningless (save for symbolic value) resolutions (Berkeley, CA, is always good for a few chuckles.). No one in the federal security apparatus is going to so much as blink when they have to conduct an operation in Eugene. "Oh, wait; we can't do that here. The City Council passed a resolution against it." Whatever....
Of course, I recognize that opposition has to begin somewhere, and Eugene is as good a place as any. Even so, for any truly effective opposition to the USA PATRIOT Act to be created, it's going to take more than one lone city council smack in the middle of the Willamette Valley.
It may be true that every chorus begins with a single voice, but when you're singing the tune that Ashcroft and his minions are, you'd best count on being drowned out.
