What have you done for me lately?

Cowboys may release Smith today

In the interest of self-disclosure, I will freely admit that I hate the Dallas Cowboys and everything they stand for. Outside of being the physical manifestation of Evil Incarnate, I'm sure Jerry Jones has many wonderful qualities. Dealing with franchise icons is apparently not one of them. Emmitt Smith will be playing elsewhere next season.

"We know he's NFL royalty, he's Dallas Cowboys royalty," Jones said. "But this is about the future of the team. We're looking at the future of the team and there are a lot of things involved. It's not about Emmitt's ability to play. We know he can play."

Smith's status has been in doubt for months because of his contract and age. He turns 34 in May and was due a base salary of $7 million next season, with a salary-cap figure of $9.8 million. If released now, he'll still count $4.9 million against next season's cap.

Right; don't let the door hit you in the butt on your way out of town, eh? As much as I hate the Cowboys, I've always admired Emmitt Smith. Even as part of an organization that has been totally devoid of class and dignity in the Jerry Jones era, Smith has always conducted himself with class and professionalism. No, he may be the player he once was, but who among us is? Emmitt deserves better, but he will have to go elsewhere to find it.

"America's Team" is a joke.
