Michael Porter tells us that the travelling hate train that is the Westboro Baptist Church is coming to town. Fred Phelps (of "God Hates Fags" fame) will be protesting a play ("The Laramie Project") at a local theater...
The WBC are the ones that protested the funeral of Mathew Shepherd with 'God Hates Fags' signs. Just trying to put the word 'fun' back into funeral, I guess. Yes... you too can see the foaming at the mouth. The slurs. The hate. Everything that makes Christianity great!
No, the WBC is not exactly a paragon of Christian love and tolerance. I can understand why one may disagree with the lifestyle choice of other people, but I would ask what give the WBC the right to brand those who differ as evil? And to do so in the name of Christianity? Clearly, Fred Phelps knows NOTHING about the true meaning of the religion he professes to adhere to.
At least Michael has plenty of ammunition, though I doubt that Phelps or the WBC would see the least bit of humor in this. Michael paraphrases a WBC press release in which the WBC says that
Mary Washington College is "dyke infested". Its president is "demon possessed" and the theatre director is a sodomite.
I would imagine that Phelps wouldn't want to be responsible for any unintended consequences....
Excellent recomendations all around. So I guess if you happen to be a lesbian you now know the best place to find yourself a date in the Fredericksburg area.
Of course, Fred Phelps IS probably a better Christian than any of the rest of us, so he probably feels justified in spreading his hate and vitriol. This also means he probably has no idea what a total jackass he is. It's OK, though; without jackasses like him, I'd be limited to writing about war and terrorism.
