DeLay serves up tension at dinner for diplomat
Ever the arbiter of good manners and polite discourse, Tom DeLay has once again demonstrated that he is no threat to Miss Manners.
Rep. Tom DeLay proves, again, that he doesn't easily suffer dissenting opinions. While attending a reception at the home of an Indian diplomat, the Sugar Land Republican suggested to a man from France that he should thank the United States for saving his country from German occupation during War World II, instead of criticizing the current U.S.-led campaign against Iraq.
"It was obvious we were not going to agree," DeLay said Tuesday, recounting a conversation that took place Jan. 25 at the Houston home of Skand Ranjan-Tayal, India's consul general.
The House majority leader said he asked the Frenchman if he spoke German.
"And he looked at me kind of funny and said, `No, I don't speak German,' " DeLay recalled. "And I said, `You're welcome,' turned around and walked off."
And we wonder where the term "Ugly American" originated? Well, no one has ever accused DeLay of being particularly pleasant or hospitable, but being a Grade-A asshole seems rather uncalled for. Of course, Tom DeLay has always been all about his own self-aggrandizement, and if being a dickweed helps his cause, so be it. It's just too bad that he's my Congressman, and it's a travesty that his constituents can't seem to see through his tired act.
